Canton Lounge Bar is located at the east end of Hay Street, right next to Shots Espresso Bar on the first floor, so it is not easily seen if you are not actually looking for the place.  To get there, you go through a retro styled corridor with silver curtains (check out the pic!) and up a flight of stairs, and there yoFlashy corridor leading to the loungeu will be greeted with a loft-style room with a big chandelier in the middle, and a side room filled with comfortable lounge seats (quite similar to The George on St. Georges Tce).

I’d always walked past this place and thought it was closed down (it used to be a chinese restaurant) but later found out that it was reopened as a bar when my friend invited me to one of the Young Engineers cocktail function to be held there.  I had a peek at their website and liked the look so suggested for us to have lunch here one day (especially with their buy one get one free deal from the Ent book!) when my ex-colleague wanted to catch up.

I had taken some photos of the place but they didn’t turn out too nice (old camera + dim lighting due to overcast weather is not a very good combination) so check out their website if you want to have a better feel of the place.

Their menu consisted of selected few dishes but does come complete with starters, mains and desserts.  They also have an extensive drinks list (well, being a bar and all!)

We had some Lattes for drinks and received complimentary Bread with Butter (they came at the right time as we were really hungry by then!).  They were warm and soft – perfect!

For mains, we had:

  • Crisp skin barramundi, broccolini, mandarin and cauliflower puree
  • Roast lamb rump, braised eggplant, white beans, basil and salsa verde

The dishes came out and the first thing I noticed was how nicely they were presented.  The second thing we thought were they were quite small-sized (for some reason, we expected them to be big).  This was good though coz I didn’t want to be too full going back to work.

I had the Barramundi as usual and it tasted good – the cauliflower puree was different from the normal mash you get and the mandarin gave a refreshing after taste.  I also loved the broccolini.  I liked this dish as they used different ingredients to match the fish so you don’t feel like it’s similar to any other dishes you eat elsewhere.  I forgot to ask my friend to give a detailed comment on the Lamb Rump – she just said it was good!

The service was quite prompt (a plus during our limited lunch hour) so we were very happy.  Overall a good lunch!  I will definitely be back to try their other dishes if the occasion arises and maybe some of their cocktails (I read good reviews!).
