Hong Kong BBQ, Northbridge

Hong Kong BBQ is located on Francis Street in Northbridge, an average sized Chinese restaurant that has been around for ages as far as I can remember.  It is right opposite another Chinese restaurant that has been around for ages too, Joy Garden (click on the restaurant’s name for a review of this restaurant).

Hong Kong BBQ is famous for its bbq and roasted meats.  It looks like a typical Hong Kong restaurant, with minimal decoration, a large painting on the wall of eight Koi fish in a pond which, in the Chinese tradition symbolises abundance, a tank full of live seafood and hanging roasted pork/bbq pork/roasted duck etc at the front window.

These bbq and roasted meats are quite a sight walking pass the restaurant along with the chef butchering them up.  There are meats such as violin duck, soya sauce chicken, roast pigeon, bbq pork, roast pork, roast duck and many more.

For those that are not a fan of bbq and roasted meats, they also serve a variety of Chinese dishes so never fear.  For dinner that night, we had:

  • 2 x plates of Roast Combination Platter
  • Cantonese Style Fillet Steak
  • Sizzling Japanese Tofu
  • Peking Pork Spare Ribs
  • Seafood Beancurd Claypot
  • Spinach with Three Styled Egg (I made this name up as I can’t remember what it’s called)


For the Roast Combination Platter, we ordered two plates of the same combination of roast duck, roast pork and barbequed pork.  This is how much we like the roast meats there!  There’s a choice of 2, 3 or 4 combination with a small platter costing $22 and a large $28.

I must say, the roast pork and roast duck in this place are awesome!  The roast pork was tender with just the right amount of top layer fat and crispy skin.  Yum!  The roast duck was crispy with juicy meat and went so well dipped in plum sauce.  My all time favourite food!  I didn’t have too much of the bbq pork though as the ones here really can’t compare with those I had in Malaysia.


All the dishes turned out really good and are substantial servings too.  I liked the tenderness of the steak in the Cantonese Style Fillet Steak, stir fried with onions and the crispiness of the Peking Pork Spare Ribs.  Both of these dishes have a thick and sweet sauce so they must be consumed with steamed rice.

The dish that I liked the best that night was the Spinach cooked with Three Different Eggs.  I didn’t quite catch the name of this dish when my friend ordered it (plus it was ordered in chinese) but this veggie dish is really delicious.  It’s basically spinach cooked with normal egg, century egg and salted egg – has a unique taste and I like the abundance of sauce which is always nice with steamed rice.  I have to find out the name of this dish so that I can order it again next time!

Hong Kong BBQ is always a safe restaurant to go to for a nice Chinese meal as you will always get consistent yummy dishes, you can’t really go wrong here.  Service is quite good and food gets served quick too!  It’s no wonder it’s been around for ages!

      Thanks for dropping by! Unfortunately, we do not have a copy of the menu handy to pass it on to you.

      I have tried looking around our usual reference websites and it seems that they too, don’t have a copy. It might be worth giving the restaurant a quick call to see if they can arrange a soft copy for you.

    Well, after all the reviews I read on this site, I must admit I was looking forward to having another restaurant on our short list but I was very disappointed.

    Of all the dining experiences I have lived through (and there are many), this was definitely the worst.

    When you go to a restaurant, you expect to be served, not to be embarrassed (not me, one of my guests).

    I am part of a group of people who have lunch on one or more occassions every month. We are professional businessmen.

    Upon arriving and settling in, one of my guests was “put through the ringer” by one of the staff members (who is one of the family members) because he was drinking beer. He has drunk beer at many restaurants and this is the first time he has ever been attacked in that way. I’m not really sure where her agression came from but it wasn’t nice.

    We should have left at this point in time and I wish we did.

    The menu selection was good and although there was definitely more attention given to other customers, we were OK with that.

    I ordered the meals and asked for some recommendations. Two dishes were recommended apart from the other dishes we selected; a beef dish and a vegetable dish. I made a comment to the effect of “as long as they’re in this price range” as I pointed to the group of items on the menu.

    When I went to pay the bill, I was somewhat shocked that the rather tough small beef dish they served actually cost $30 and the vegetable dish cost $22.

    I thought that was a bit rude as if a dish is around double the price of the same group of items you are looking at, then you should at least be advised of the price.

    I also found it somewhat amusing when I said to make it a round $180 instead of $182 and the same person snapped back with the same agression she had when she was scolding one of my guests.

    I will never go there again and I know there are far more decent people out there that would will be happy to serve food and be friendly at the same time.

    It doesn’t take that much intelligence to be friendly to other people.

      Thanks for your feedback and I’m sorry to hear of your recent experience at the restaurant. I have not been there in awhile, not too sure whether they are still run by the same people. Must check it out one of these days!

      Hope you will find a better restaurant to dine with your mates for your next lunch outing.
