Movie: Jiro Dreams of Sushi + Aisuru Sushi, Northbridge

Thanks to Curious Distribution, the PFEs were fortunate enough to receive complimentary tickets to watch the documentary behind Jiro Ono, the 85 year old sushi master who is considered the country’s national treasure, and whose restaurant is the first of its kind to be awarded a 3 star Michelin review. The most amazing thing about him is that he is still going strong in his art of sushi making, working tirelessly from morning till night at his 10 seat, sushi-only restaurant located in the Ginza subway station.  Why?  Because he truly loves his job!  Wow, this is probably one of the rare times Miss L has heard one declaring with such passion the love one has for his job!  Such statement is few and far between in this society of ours!

On this occasion, only Miss L out of the PFEs was able to make the movie. Here are some of her highlights – for the synopsis and detailed info of the movie, please visit the official website:

  • It’s an extremely personal movie, real and honest, the awkward silences after certain comments are made  (which can be viewed as politically incorrect)  portrayed the authenticity of the people;
  • The concept of excellence and pride in one’s work;
  • The degree of preparation Jiro and his apprentices go through to produce each component of the sushi, one example being the requirement to massage an octopus for 50minutes to soften its flesh before it can be served! 50mins!! The patience required is beyond imagination, and it’s not only the one octopus!
  • The training of his apprentices – they are only allowed to make an egg sushi after 1o years of working with him!! 10 years!! The guy had to make more than 2000 pieces before the egg sushi was deemed acceptable by Jiro.  He cried when Jiro finally approved of it.  He even had tears in his eyes whilst retelling his story.  Wow!
  • An insight into the fish market and the way the fish are auctioned…the singing and dancing much to the outsider’s amusement;
  • A concern with the global issue of tuna over-farming and the distaste of consumerism;
  • And lastly, instilling a dream in Miss L to travel to Tokyo to dine in his restaurant!!

This movie is definitely worth watching – highly recommended for the insights into the life of a sushi master especially the values he holds regarding the standard of excellence, and the dedication required to truly master a skill – a lifetime of learning, risk taking, stepping out of ones comfort zone to achieve bigger and better things.  Terrific!



Before the movie my friend and I decided to have a quick dinner at the popular Aisuru Sushi in Northbridge.   I’d been wanting to eat there for ages…ever since spying all the delicious photos taken by other food bloggers that had gone before me. What better way than to dine at a sushi joint before watching a movie about sushi – it would at least kerb any sudden desire for the food in the middle of the movie, or so I hoped!

As we were the first ones to arrive, we were seated at what we told was the best spot in the restaurant, right in front of the sushi chefs!  We were able to watch the whole sushi assembling including the torching – it was heaps of fun!

We had the following for dinner:

  • Creamy Popcorn Shrimp ($15.50) – absolutely delicious!  There were 5 pieces of crispy tempura prawns coated in a spicy mayonnaise sauce.  I couldn’t get enough of it.  My favourite!

  • Grilled Scallop & Avocado Roll ($11 for 4 pieces) – avocado & crab stick wrapped in nori and shari, topped with seared scallops & drizzled with Japanese mayo
  • Caterpillar Roll ($10 for 4 pieces) – unagi eel & cucumber wrapped in nori and shari, topped with sliced avocado, fish eggs and drizzled with aioli sauce & unagi eel sauce
  • Torch Roll ($11 for 4 pieces) – tempura prawn, avocado & crab stick wrapped in nori and shari, topped with tuna & pickled mackerel, drizzled with spicy sauce and torched
  • Plum Flower Roll ($9 for 4 pieces) – chicken teriyaki & avocado wrapped in nori and shari, wrapped again in tamago egg, drizzled with special plum sauce

Out of the four sushis ordered, my favourite would be the Torch Roll!  I love the taste of the torched tuna and the crunchy tempura prawn in the middle.  My next favourite would be the Caterpillar Roll with big chunks of avocado topped with aioli goodness.  It’s like eating yummy fat,  I can eat it all day!  They are definitely in the must-try list.

Overall it was a very enjoyable dining experience, great food and quick and friendly service.  I like how there are two sizes to the servings, I love to try a bit of everything so ordering the smaller portion of each dish was great for me.  The manager was also very nice and chatty.  He couldn’t stop talking about Jiro-sama (what he referred Jiro as) when I told him that we were going to watch the movie after the meal.  He said he brought his whole staff to watch the movie and they totally loved it.  I will definitely be back to try their other dishes!

    Hi Food Engineers, this review has resulted in me calling up my girlies and making a sushi date at Sake (Sydney – you must try if you come visit!) Why can’t I read about sushi without immediately needing to have some! I was wondering if I could maybe get some help? I’m working on an app atm, and a part of the app will have bloggers recommending 5-10 places in their city to check out, I was wondering if you might recommend maybe a few places you love?
