The Merrywell, Crown

Ever since reading about the opening of the Merrywell in the Crown booklet, I was captivated by the Lollipop Buffalo Wings on offer! “I must go try it” I thought. My first taste of Buffalo Wings was in Vegas earlier this year and I really liked it! Must go try..must go try! An opportunity arose after watching the last of the “Annie” show one afternoon. Time for snacks!

The Merrywell is a modern pub serving American food with a twist, classified as the ‘ultimate dude food’. It has a spacious outdoor beer garden and inner bar.  The dining area is swept along one side of the pub, with one portion sunken in the middle.  We opted to sit inside.

The menu is divided into bar snacks, normal and dinner menu.  As it was late arvo, we could only order from the normal menu, with share plates, salads, burgers, samwiches and sides on offer.

We had the following:

  • Lemon Lime Bitters (no alcohol this time round)

  • Wagyu Mini Beef Burgers 3pc ($21) which consisted of white cheddar, BBQ caramelised onions and B&B pickles.  Absolutely delicious!  The beef was very tasty and well grilled, with a crunchy bread top.  Oh and the pickles!  They were divine for one who does not normally eat pickle.  It made me wish for more!  I would definitely order this again!

  • Lollipop Buffalo Wings ($21) with blue cheese fondue and celery sticks.  The Buffalo Wings were not as tasty as I expected (maybe I had really high expectations!).  They were spicy and saucy but no oomph to them.  It would be great if the celery sticks were thicker as well.

  • The Merrywell Chips ($15) – crisp ripped potatoes and bacon aioli. This is a must order, love the crunchy wedges, and best of all….the SAUCE!  creamy fatty goodness! Couldn’t get enough of them!

Overall, it was a delicious snacking afternoon.  I like the different varieties of food on offer although the dishes were more on the pricey side.  I guess one would expect these prices in this kind of establishment.  The place was pumping with loud music, good for an afternoon session but not for a quiet chat.  Everyone was nicely dressed too! Service was on the average side, with only one wait staff offering great service.  Otherwise the others seem too busy to serve us.  Hit and miss, but at least the food is good!

I went back recently to try their dinner menu and had a great meal! The ordering had changed to pay and order at the front counter for food and drinks at the bar. We had the following:

  • Guinness Beer
  • Lick Pier Ginger Beer – sweeter than the usual brand I like (from Matso’s)

GuinnessLick Pier Ginger Beer

  • Fried Chicken & Red Velvet Waffles with killer bee honey ($28) – been wanting to try this for ages and it did not disappoint. It’s a funny combination with the butter on the waffles making it savory and honey on the chicken making it sweet. Like it!

Fried Chicen & Red Velvet Waffles

  • BBQ “JD & Coke” Ribs with mexican corn on cob and watermelon ($36) – the ribs were salty but was balanced out by the refreshing watermelon. Meat off the ribs were tender.

BBQ JD & Coke Ribs

  • The Merrywell Angus Burger with aged cheddar cheese, bacon, secret sauce, caramelised onions, LTO, pickles and fries ($25) – the burger patty was delicious!

Merrywell Angus Burger

  • Desserts in Jar – Apple Crumble & Lamington Trifle ($9 each) – preferred the Lamington Trifle over the Apple Crumble as the crumble was not very sweet, slightly bland in taste.

Desserts in Jars

Will be back to try other items on their menu!
