Red Basil Thai Cuisine, Victoria Park

Red Basil is located on the upper end of Albany Highway (the end nearer to the city), next to Crust Pizza.  Ever since discovering the restaurant, I’d been here every single week for four weeks in a row as my friend became ‘addicted’ to their food!  I must say though that the food is pretty good and reasonably priced…especially their soft shell crab.  Cheap and very yummy!

A small restaurant in size, it is frequently packed out for lunch and dinner on the weekend.  It has a fast turnaround though so one does not have to wait too long for a table.

Inside the restaurant

Here are some of the dishes we had tried so far:

  • Thai Iced Milk Tea ($2) – this is pre-made and is a bargain at $2 per glass although it was slightly sweet for my liking.  I may be biased though as I am not too fond of sweet drinks. I had also ordered the Thai Iced Milk Coffee which was definitely too sweet for me.

  • Soft Shell Crab ($6) served with sweet chilli sauce and side salad.  This is one of my favorite dish.  Meaty deep fried crab pieces with juicy flesh! They are not like those which are dry on the inside (found in numerous restaurants I’d visited).  Generous serving too for the price!

Soft shell crab

  • Thai Style Som Tum (Papaya salad) $9 with peanuts, dried shrimps, tomato, chilli and bean. This was far too spicy for me even though we had asked for a mild version. I’m a chilli-wuss! :p

Som Tum

  • Seafood Pad Thai ($13.90) thin rice noodles stir fried with egg, crush peanuts and bean sprouts.  This dish did not rock my boat as expected.  Generous amount of seafood though.

Seafood Pad Thai

  • Chicken Pad See Eew ($9.50) thick flat rice noodles stir fried with egg, kai lan and dark soy sauce. This was a recommendation by the waitstaff as an alternative to the Pad Thai and was surprisingly great! It was the appetizing sauce and the slithery noodles.  Another favorite! We had ordered this every single time thereafter!

Pad See Eew

  • Chicken Basil ($9.50) stir fried minced chicken, fresh chilli and basil.  This seemed to be a few customers’ favorite as we spied this on numerous tables.  Once again, this dish was far too hot for me!  I must train myself to eat real chilli one day!

Chicken Basil

  • Pineapple Fried Rice – this was not in the menu but the chef cooked it following our request.  Thank you! It turned out a bit oily for me but the others liked it.

Pineapple Fried Rice

  • Chicken Green Curry ($11.90) with carrot, green bean, bamboo shoot, fresh chilli, kaffir leaves and basil.  Another favorite, the curry tasted authentic and went well with steamed rice.  I couldn’t get enough of it!

Chicken Green Curry

Overall, Red Basil is a great local find, delicious food at good prices. Out of the times I’d been, there was only one time that the food was different (either some dishes were too salty or the crab was too deep fried). Hopefully it was a once off.  I will definitely be back for a casual meal again!
