Queenies, Surry Hill

The ForrestersWebsite: http://www.queenies.com.au/

Queenies is located on Level 1 at the Forresters in Surry Hills. We stumbled upon Queenies whilst browsing through Dimmi for a restaurant to book to claim our $50 voucher for dinner. Queenies serves Jamaican cuisine, very different to what I would normally have so we decided to give it a go.

It was quite a track getting there by foot from Chippendale where hubby has a parking spot for work. An uphill track as well :(. We were tired and hungry by the time we arrived! As we booked for an early spot (right when the restaurant opens), we had the restaurant to ourselves! Hope this means the food will come out fast!

The restaurant was dimly lit with an old diner feel to it. One could get quite cozy here! The lighting though didn’t help much with the food photos I took 😛

Inside the restaurant

We were greeted warmly by the hostess who introduced the menu to us. There are a number of BBQ and grilled meats on the menu. We asked for recommendations and were told to check out the Bammies, a traditional Jamaican cassava flatbread where the cassava is soaked, grounded and pressed into a taco shape, then soaked in coconut milk and quick fried. We ordered a couple to try. They came with fillings such as Jerk Pork, Coconut Prawn or Fried Jalapeno ($7 each).

Bammies Bammies

The Bammies were tasty, they had a hard casing with a softer interior, and were thicker compared to your regular tacos. The dryness was offset by the generous amount of sauce smeared on them. The Jerk Pork Bammies came with pineapple salsa which was a delightful combination. We are off to a great start!

Before I forget the menu…not a big range but a few interesting items on there! There is a variety of cocktails and beers served at Queenies for those who interested.

The Menu

We were served a complimentary starter of watermelon pieces topped with grilled grated coconut. Refreshing!

For mains, we ordered the Half and Half ($30) which consisted of Jerk Chicken, Jerk Ribs, sweet potato fries, grilled corn and island slaw. It was here that I started playing with my camera’s flash to get a better picture, the hubby ended up using the flash from his phone to help me!

Half and Half

The Half and Half looked huge but we did wished there were more meat on the plate by the time we finished with it. The Jerk Chicken and Ribs were flavorsome, the chicken was especially succulent. I enjoyed it! And nothing beats crispy sweet potato fries and chargrilled corn as sides, nod of approval there. The only drawback was the island slaw which was a bit too dry for our liking, it would have been better with more sauce.

Not wanting to miss out on desserts, I ordered a Banoffee Pie to end the night. It was an ok dessert, crunchy base topped with banana, cream and an almost sickeningly sweet toffee sauce which fortunately was offset by the slightly bitter chocolate base. Queenies does not serve coffee or tea, be aware before ordering your dessert! I always like my dessert with a cup of coffee!

All in all it was a good experience of Jamaican cuisine, service was prompt and friendly. Glad I tried this restaurant out!
