Cafe Once Upon A Time is located on West Parade, opposite the West Ryde train station and in close proximity to Marketplace Centre where Woolies and Coles are situated. We were looking for a cafe nearby for brunch and decided to give the cafe a go. We parked at the Marketplace Centre (2 hours free parking) and ventured out to look for it. Not being too familiar with its location we ended up getting in through the back door. It was then that I realized what a huge cafe it is! Double storey with a decent sized alfresco dining area as well!
Cafe Once Upon A Time has a rustic and vintage decor, furnished with a collection of wooden tables and chairs and seemingly odds and ends but purposefully so. Quite unusual but it works. I’d been to a cafe in Melbourne that was similarly adorned but on a smaller scale. I ordered a Flat White ($3.50) to start the morning. They serve Matcha Latte as well but I was in need of real coffee that morning so did not end up ordering the matcha version. Will try that next time!
For brunch we had the Bacon, Egg & Hash Roll ($12) and the B.L.A.R.T ($15).
The Bacon, Egg & Hash Roll was a huge dish for only $12! Bacon, fried eggs, hash brown, Swiss cheese, rocket and BBQ sauce inside a bricohe bun. It was simple but a good feed.
The hubby had the B.L.A.R.T which was bacon, baby cos lettuce, avocado, rocket and tomato served in a quinoa & soy sourdough. Another big one. I loved the shoestring fries that came with this, I stole about half of it for myself hehe
Not fully satiated, I ordered Macadamia Tart to satisfy the sweet tooth in me. There were a variety of cakes and tarts to choose from in the cabinet but the tart looked too enticing to bypass. It tasted as good as it looked, fresh crumbly base with lots of crunchy macadamia nuts. Tick of approval. I liked it so much I even took one home with me to share with the family for afternoon tea.
I also took home the Mocha Roll and Strawberry Sponge Cake. The Mocha Roll was good but the Strawberry Sponge Cake was a bit of a disappointment. There was not real strawberry taste to it. I think I’m too used to the good stuff that my friend from Lottie & Belle makes. This didn’t quite match up.
Overall we were happy with our brunch at Cafe Once Upon A Time. The all day breakfast/lunch menu was not extensive but we found the dishes that we liked. Service was quick and friendly!
