Update 5/2/17 – Ho Jiak has a new sign!
Ho Jiak is a tiny hawker style stall located inside the Strathfield Plaza. One could almost miss it if not looking for it carefully as there is no obvious sign in front of the stall except one that says “Petaling Express – a taste of Malaysia”. We were recommended this place by one of hubby’s friend as they had a special dish not found anywhere….the Durian Fried Rice! What?! Durian Fried Rice?! Now that’s a first. Being the ever curious me, we had to check it out!
Ho Jiak serves Northern Penang Malaysian cuisine which is one of my favorite cuisine. We were heading to a friend’s BYO luncheon and thought immediately to get some takeaway from Ho Jiak so I can try their Durian Fried Rice. Strathfield is very busy during weekend and parking is hard to come by. We managed to get one at the plaza after going around a few times.
When we arrived at the entrance of the plaza, it was still closed so we stood in line waiting for the doors to open. A crowd was gathering already! It was quite surprising for me, there was no sale or anything of that sort but there was a crowd of people waiting for the plaza to open! I only see this in places like Japan! I guess the population here is more compact compared to Perth.
We rushed in as soon as the door opened hoping to get to Ho Jiak first as I’d read that the queue can be massive during peak time. We were lucky and did get there first but alas were told that they were not ready for service! We ordered nevertheless and hung around waiting for the takeaway. We had the Durian Fried Rice ($16.80) and the Penang Fried Kway Teow ($13.80). I wanted to to try the Chee Cheong Fun (steamd rice roll with tofu skin & sweet black sauce) as well but were told they did not have any fresh rice roll delivery on the day and could not serve that. Boo! I have to come back again another day to try it.
The Durian Fried Rice was actually fried rice with 2 x musang king durian on the side. I’d thought the durian would be infused inside the rice but maybe that would be too overpowering. I mixed the durian flesh with the fried rice and it actually worked. Hehe now I can say I have tasted durian fried rice! My durian lover friends will be envious! There was a durian sambal that came with the rice but it did not sit well with me. The sambal tasted too distinct, almost like a straight mix of durian and chili. Not my thing.
The Penang Fried Kway Teow came with Chinese sausage, prawns, egg, bean sprouts and pork lard. It was flavorsome and yummy. Would order this again!
By the time we were ready to go, the place was packed and there was a massive queue! We were lucky we escaped the wait!
A great place to visit if you crave Malaysian Penang hawker food! I’m also eyeing the Fried Chicken with Dry Egg Noodle!
