I spotted The Mandoo whilst waiting for my friend one night before we headed to Incredible Chicken for dinner (refer to the last post). The Mandoo is located on the Korean side of Rowe Street in Eastwood, inside the building that houses Aldi as well. I stumbled upon it as I came up from the Aldi car park to road level and was intrigued with a newspaper cutting they had pasted on the wall, a write up stating they serve one of the best Korean dumplings in Sydney. Ooo, I must come back and try this next time I thought.
The chance came one Sunday evening when my mother in law was out (she normally cooks dinner for us. I know we are so blessed :)) and we went out looking for a quick meal. I remembered The Mandoo and suggested to hubby for us to check it out. He happily agreed.
The Mandoo is a tiny restaurant located in the corner of the building. They were no one in the restaurant when we arrived so we could sit anywhere we wanted. Actually we thought it was a bit strange that the place was empty (I thought it’s really popular!) but eventually a few Korean families came which settled our nervousness.
We ordered the Kimchi and Pork Dumplings ($10) and Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup ($15) to share. Service was quite slow and the food took a long time to come which was weird as it was not that busy. Not sure whether this is the norm or once off. Not a good scene when you are hungry! Having said that, the staff was friendly and polite so we couldn’t really get annoyed. Eventually they came piping hot and with them complimentary kimchi as well.
Verdict for the Korean dumplings? I thought they were quite good, big in size and tasty. They were filled with kimichi, pork and glass noodles and the skin although slightly thicker than the Chinese dumplings was proportionate to the amount of filling. You get 5 pieces for one order. The hubby did not rate them too much though.
I also liked the Spicy Seafood Noodle in a broth, it was actually spicy unlike some I had tried from other Korean restaurants. I would order this again.
A great place for a quick meal and an introduction to Korean dumplings!
